The upcoming decades are likely to have more dangerous heat waves and community housing residents are at a heightened risk for heat-related morbidity and mortality. This report shares four key recommendations for policymakers to improve the livability of community housing units and to tenants’ quality of life.

An insightful discussion between two PPF Fellows

The Public Policy Forum convened a roundtable discussion on June 16, 2021, to look at the development of a national adaptation strategy in Canada that spans disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation domains. The participants represented a range of public- and private-sector perspectives on the key challenges that need to be addressed to push towards greater resilience and adaptation and confront the challenges of climate change. The conversation also looked at the need to set clear time-bound targets and performance measures and ensure these are grounded in Canada’s Emergency Management Strategy. 

As the current federal government endeavours to be the first to act materially on the promise of child care for all, questions of quality, affordability, accessibility and inclusion will stand in line behind jurisdictional bargaining.

An urban-rural scan of potential long-term effects of the future of work shows the negative effects of a displaced workforce will be felt disproportionately among rural residents, who make up the majority of high-risk employment sectors that will succumb to technology-induced disruption. Understanding how these changes could affect urban centres vs. rural areas is a crucial ingredient to long-term policymaking and key to creating an effective place-based policy agenda for Canada to manage those disruptions and keep an urban-rural economic divide that already exists from growing

Past Event

Who is fearful of automation and what do they want politicians to do about it? This paper finds a correlation between Canadians’ fear of job losses from automation and populist and nativist views—but also that Canadians favour traditional government policy approaches to job disruption, such as retraining, more than radical measures such as reducing immigration.

Hate that festers without intervention threatens public safety, and has tragic outcomes for the human rights and lived-experiences of all Canadians. Canada has developed a National Strategy on Countering Radicalization to Violence and PPF put on two events to examine the impact of hate and intolerance online, and on approaches to prevention and remedy.

Despite the decades-long fight for increased inclusion and opportunities for women in politics, research shows that women are significantly less likely than men to even consider running for office. When women feel they cannot voice their opinion without fear of retaliation or threat, robust political discourse is inhibited and essential voices are silenced. While stories of online violence directed at women in political life – elected or not – are plentiful, proposed solutions are few, and recourse seemingly non-existent.

Past Event

This project will involve Inuit, Métis and First Nations people in helping translate the impetus for economic reconciliation into actionable policy recommendations to break down barriers and open greater economic opportunity. The Inuit conference will be in Inuvik in November 2018. The events bring together community leaders, Indigenous business leaders, academics, policymakers and young people.
