As the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Dr. Fatih Birol has helped shape the world’s understanding of economic policy as it relates to energy, energy security and climate change. After rising through the ranks of the IEA over two decades, he has led recent efforts to broaden the agency’s focus beyond oil to also cover electricity, natural gas, renewables and critical minerals.

In April, he was named for the second time as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.

“Fatih has worked to keep countries aligned even as the world fragments, ensuring the IEA remains true to its founding mission of energy security and cooperation,” writes Jason Bordoff, director of the Center on Global Energy Policy, in Time.  “What sets Fatih apart is not only his commitment to facts and data, but his ability to anticipate new challenges while emphasizing the importance of abundant energy for development in the Global South and the need to address energy’s role in climate change.”

Dr. Birol is the first recipient of PPF’s Global Laureate Award.
